Look up the maximum weight your boat can carry before you leave the shore. A swamped or tipped boat can be a catastrophe, especially if you are in deep water. Make sure you are safe by keeping the weight capacity on the boat to a comfortable level.
If you’d like to create a memory of your big catch, take a photo so you don’t need to take the fish with you. This way your fish will live to be caught another day and the photo is your keepsake of your great catch.
Never waste fish if you can avoid it. It’s exciting to catch a ton of fish, but it’s very wasteful to bring a huge bucket home with you, especially if you know most are going to be thrown away. When you have caught more than you can use, toss some back or make plans to share some with your friends.
Do not panic when you hook a big fish. When the fish is trying to swim away, do not fight it and try to reel it in. This will allow you to relax and wait until you feel less tension in the line to start reeling in your catch. Once you have the hook securely attached to the fish, start dragging. Keep the fishing rod angled at about 45 degrees to the surface of the water, keeping it pointed towards your fish.
Sharp hooks are important when it comes to fishing. Even if you’re doing everything else right, a dull hook will make catching fish extraordinarily difficult. You can sharpen your hook as you fish, or carry extra hooks that are already sharpened. A fisherman’s friend while fishing will be a sharp hook.
Full Moon
It’s important that fishermen educate themselves about moon phases, and how they effect the behavior of fish. Usually, the best times to fish are during a full moon. The brighter moonlight means you will be seen more easily, so keep this in mind when you are dressing for your full moon fishing excursion.
When you have a fish on your line, observe its movements to determine what action you should take. Its jumping will diminish before it rolls to its side. When it rolls over like this, that means the fish is tired, and you can reel it in with ease. Avoid reeling in until you observe the fish roll over sideways.
Fishing relies upon a ton of patience. If patience isn’t your strongest suit, you may consider a sport that is more fast-paced. Start with short fishing trips and work your way up to lengthier ones.
When you feel like fishing for larger fish, be sure to use bigger bait. It’s common sense really; catch big fish with big bait and small fish with small bait. To catch larger varieties of fish, like Pike or Muskie, consider using Blugill or Crappie bait.
Mosquito Bites
Bring bug spray. You’ll be shocked at just how many insects are out on the river if you’ve never been. Make sure you get some spray to repel bugs so that they don’t bother you. Don’t end up covered in mosquito bites over every unprotected inch of your body. You do not want to finish your fishing trip with tons of mosquito bites.
Keep your line in the water for the entire time you are fishing. A lot of time is typically wasted by frequently switching lures and untangling fishing line, among other things. Fish will only be caught when your line is out inside the water.
Before leaving to go on a fishing trip be sure to have everything you need available. Nothing is worse than realizing you forgot something at home when you’ve already reached your destination. Double check that you’ve brought food, the right bait and tackle, and the proper fishing wear associated to your location.
Clean Fish
You should know how to clean fish before you catch them. All you need is a cutting table and a small knife. Hold your fish belly up, and insert your knife at the anus of the fish. Draw your knife from there to over the belly, and continue all the way to the head of the fish. Cut its head as you pull out its organs in the opposite direction. You’ll have an open and clean fish as a result.
Whenever you try a new fishing spot, it can be quite helpful to meet the local fishermen at the nearby bait shop. It’s nice to support the community by purchasing local fishing gear and fishing flies. If you seem more interested in the area, locals will befriend you more. They can supply you with all the tips you need to be really successful.
