Whenever you are fishing out of a boat, try and keep the floor as dry as possible. You don’t need to fall or trip on the boat, since you might have sharp objects aboard. Stay vigilant, and mop up spills and puddles as soon as you notice them.
Any avid fisherman should have a sharp hook at their disposal. If the hook scratches your nail when it is dragged over it, you have a well sharpened hook. If it doesn’t, you should replace or sharpen it to catch more fish.
Find the perfect place to fish, and then cast slightly upstream of that spot. That will take your bait and hook past the fish. This looks natural and can can do as much, or more, to attract a fish as your choice in bait can. This method is especially helpful when the fish is in an area with debris or obstructions.
If you’re fishing using synthetic bait, change the color of it every so often. This is especially true when you have been fishing for some time without a nibble. Fish are sometimes attracted to a bait that is a different shade or brighter than they are accustomed to, which could result in a catch.
Be careful you don’t catch anything on fire when fishing near the bank. Some people smoke as they fish, which is why you must be careful that the hot ashes do not create a fire. The immediate area of the bank is of course wet. The foliage near the bank is quite flammable however.
Know what odors are on your hands. You may accidently pass perfume or other odors on your hands to the bait you are using, causing it to take on a unappealing scent. If fish in the lake smell this, they won’t bite.
If you choose to utilize a net to bring your fish into the boat, it is best to capture the fish head first. Having the fish enter head first lessens its chances of moving around and escaping. Most of the time, you should only net when it is necessary.
If you are fishing in an unfamiliar area, remember that you may be required to purchase a license to do so. Each state has its own fishing license; many offer the option to purchase a license for a single day or an entire year.
Don’t freak out if you catch a large fish. Large fish can put up a fight; don’t reel them in immediately or you risk your rod breaking. First you need to set the drag, then patiently wait for fatigue to set in on the fish, after that you slowly reel the fish in.
Check the weather preceding your fishing trip! Sometimes, the weather might not be good for fishing. The ideal time to fish is when the sky is overcast but not stormy. Although other weather conditions can be suitable as well, an overcast sky is the best general situation when it comes to catching the highest number of fish.
The time of day and temperatures of the air and water all have an impact on your fishing success. With bass, larger fish are more active at dusk and dawn, when the bait fish are active. Always ensure that the water temperature is not below 50 degrees when trying to fish at these times of day.

Watch out for the teeth in fish, such as walleye and pike. This kind of fish will bite at you with zeal, and their teeth are very sharp. The belly is the best place to grip these fish. Do not try to retrieve your hook until after the fish has died. If you’re into catch and release, then wear gloves to do so.
